The founder & operator until his death on December 17, 1921 was John H. Shaw, Sr., a pioneer undertaker & business figure of the Cape Fear Region. He established John H. Shaw's Son Funeral Home in June of 1895.

Our Beginnings
Shaw's Mortuary was established in June, 1895 at No.11 South Second Street here in Wilmington, North Carolina. In 1924 the funeral home relocated to 515 Red Cross Street & later in the 1930's moved across the street to 518-520 Red Cross Street. When the business was taken over by John H. Shaw Sr sons, William L. Shaw & Dr. Herbert Bell Shaw, the name was changed to John H. Shaw's Sons Funeral Service. From the humble beginnings of the horse-drawn hearse & the home-made coffin, Shaw's Funeral Home has come a long way & today continues to be one of the finest mortuaries offering dedicated service, modern equipment & professionalism. Our motto contiues to be "The Test of the Years is Your Proof of Our Dependability". We are the oldest Black firm in Wilmington & one of the oldest Black businesses in North Carolina. The foundation of our business is to insure the best service for every family in time of bereavement. Our four cardinal principles of the business are honesty, integrity, consideration & progressievness. ALL Burial, Funeral Insurance & Pre-Need Funeral Trust are transferable.
