Throughout her illness, Willie Mae maintained her kindness, grace, compassion, and love of family and friends.  She was a bright light in this world, and leaves behind a legacy of love, empathy, and compassion that will continue to inspire those that knew and loved her.  Willie Mae was born May 11, 1945, to the late Aria and Isabelle Malone in Navassa, NC.  She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at an early age by joining Mt. Calvary African Methodist Episcopal Church.  Willie Mae was a regular presence in the pews at Mt. Calvary AME Church throughout her childhood and adulthood.  She served as a member of the Usher Board until her illness prevented her from attending services.  Willie Mae was educated in the Brunswick County school system and Miller-Motte College.  After completing her education, she eventually relocated to New York where she met her husband Velinza "Flynn" McKoy, who she married six months later.  The couple's 52-year union produced three children, April Murphy (Leroy) of Castle Hayne, NC, Shamara McKoy (Larry Dorman) of Rye, NY and Castle Hayne, NC, and James McKoy of Fayetteville, NC. Willie Mae was a proud wife who did not hesitate to tell people about Flynn's hardworking, protective, and respectful nature, and their marriage was the ultimate representation of "in sickness and in health" with Flynn being a daily presence at her bedside throughout her illness.  Outside of her family, Willie Mae's loving and kind nature could be observed through her work as a Certified Nursing Assistant.  She spent years working at Hillhaven Rehab and Convalescent Center in Wilmington, NC, and providing in-home care for the elderly.  During that time, she would go above and beyond for her patients by doing things such as using her own money to purchase products like lotion, hair care products, and perfumes to give her patients extra TLC.  In addition to her husband and three children, Willie Mae's precious memories will be cherished by her grandchildren Shamara (Jaquan), Denesha, Damion, and great-grandson Cainen, all of Wilmington, NC; one brother Harrisson Malone (Patricia) of Wilmington, NC; God parents, William and Juanita Paris; brothers-in-law Harold McKoy (Mary) of Yonkers, NY, Charlie Graham (Vivian) of Hampstead, NC; sister-in-law Julia "Cindy" Linton of Miami, FL; nieces Alicia, LaTonyia (Pat), Denise (Derwood), Alyson, Valerie (Veronica), Debra, Julie, Dawn, Tomeka, Chapelle, and Quanna; nephews Angelo (Kim), Jermaine (DeAnna), Harold Jr., Brian (Renee), Eric (Valentina), Walter (Brandy), DeAndre (Glodean), Michael, Freddie (Alisha), Andre and Corey (Christy); special friend Barbara Watson and a host of other family and friends.  Two sisters, Ella Graham, and Cora Lee Walker, one brother, Aria Malone, Jr., and a niece, Bernice Walker, preceded her in death.
