A memorial service will be held 1:00 P.M. on Friday, August 4, 2023, at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. United States Army Sergeant 1st Class Willie Troy Jr. was born on September 5, 1948, in Manhattan New York. He passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie Troy Sr. and Mary Davis, his daughter, Gwendolyn Hackett and son, Brian Troy. United States Army Sergeant 1st Class Willie Troy Jr. served 24 1/2 years. His career began with 2 tours in Vietnam and 3 tours in Germany and Italy. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, 2 Army Commendation Medals, and numerous other awards. Combat Veteran 1st Sergeant Willie Troy, Jr., loved his country and the soldiers he mentored throughout his career. He returned to Wilmington, North Carolina with his family when he retired from serving his country in 1992 and worked at International Federal Paper for 20 plus years. He later retired again to spend more time with his family. He loved music and enjoyed playing at different events. He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved watching movies and playing his PlayStation. He was a member of Warner Temple AME Zion church and in 2016 he joined Mt Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Roosevelt Baxter, Jr, and was baptized April 17, 2016. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Bobbie Byas Troy of Wilmington, NC who he cherished and adored; daughter, Natasha Troy of Wilmington, NC; grandsons, Marshall Hackett, and Lavell Moore both of Charlotte, NC, Terrance Troy and Tyrell Troy both of Wilmington, NC; granddaughters, Mayshayla McDowell (Sarah) of Chicago, IL and India Troy of Wilmington, NC; sisters, Mary Porter of Wilmington, NC, Evangelist Doris Damon of Columbia, SC, and Josephine Goodnight of New Jersey; one brother, Herbert Goodnight, Jr.; nieces, Jaqueline Daugherty (Ricky) of Maryland, Mary Curry of Jacksonville, NC, and Lucille Booker of Atlanta, GA; uncle Andrew (Mary Lou) Brown of Detroit, MI; special cousin, Rubye White of Wilmington, NC; special friend, Don Dooley, Capt., US Army (Ret.) of Rockford, MI; a host of great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
