Funeral service will be 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Warner Temple AME Zion Church. Burial will follow in Pine Forest Cemetery. Visitation is at 3:00 P.M. on Friday at the funeral home.
Willie Black of Wilmington, North Carolina departed this life on Monday, January 13, 2025, while resting peacefully in his earthly home of 54 years. He was born in Wilmington on January 11, 1944, to the late Rosa Bell Black and David Kelly. Willie lived most of his life on 7th Street beginning on North 7th Street, where he was raised by his mother and grandmother, the late Annie Bell Lamb, then moving to South 7th Street with his bride, Shirley Galloway Black, his mother and two eldest children, Rodney Tyrone Black and Sheliah Denise Black. The family was completed with two more children, Demetria LaTonya Black and Willie Sarrad Black. Willie devoted his life to taking care of his family and extended family including friends, neighbors and anyone in need. His caring heart and generous nature were always apparent. When Willie made new friends, they became his friends for life. Willie graduated from Williston Senior High School in 1965. He remained a devoted and faithful member of the graduating class throughout his life. In his youth, Willie was a hard worker who always kept an after-school job. As an adult, he was employed at Babcock & Wilcox until they closed. He continued to work until he retired from Corning in 2009. Willie always looked forward to summer vacations and travel with family and friends. His love of family, road trips and cruises continued after retirement. Giving loved ones a reason to smile and laugh was his God given talent. Willie leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 56 years, Shirley Galloway Black, his loving children, Sheliah Denise Black, Demetria LaTanya Black and Willie Sarrad Black, his grandchildren, Mario Black (Tameka), Steven Robinson, DaKayda Boone and Kaiden Hill Black, his great grandson Zion Black; eight dearest cousins Virginia Flowers, Edna Mae Miller, Wanda Williams, Andre Williams, Cheryl Nixon, Lawrence Miller, Mark Miller, Reginald Miller; five much loved nieces and nephews Michelle Galloway, Shemucca Galloway, Shamari Boone (Octavia), Lateisha Mitchell (Carlton), Curtis Galloway, Natasha Beatty (Demetrius), Danielle Clemmons; several close family cousins; Marcel Miller (Angela), Alicia Miller, Antonio Miller (Stephanie), Portia Williams (Timothy); special in-laws Michael Galloway, Elizabeth Mitchell, Diane Galloway, Cynthia Clemmons, Queen McLoud (Henry), Gracie Merrick (David); and a host of special family and friends. Willie is predeceased by his parents Rosa Bell Black, David Kelly, and his son Rodney Tyrone Black.
