Gibbs
Feb 4, 1945 — Jul 2, 2026
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at The Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary, 412 Ann Street, Wilmington, NC.
William B. "Bill" Gibbs, age 81, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service, community devotion, and profound love for his family. Born on February 4, 1945, Bill was the son of the late Sarah E. Wright and William D. "Preacher" Wright. He grew up with a strong sense of duty and purpose. He began his education at St. Thomas School and was a proud graduate of Williston High School. He went on to further his education at North Carolina A&T State University and the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Bill honorably served his country as an Intelligence Analyst with the U.S. Air Force, later continuing his path of public service within the Correctional Facility system and as a Sergeant with the NC State Ports. He concluded his professional journey as an Administrator with Cape Fear Community College, where he impacted countless lives. Beyond his professional achievements, Bill’s heart belonged to his community. He was a familiar, dependable face to many, volunteering his time generously. He was a dedicated "track dad" with the Port City Track Club, a protective and positive presence with the Watch D.O.G.S. program at Gregory Elementary School, and a compassionate volunteer for Meals on Wheels. A faithful member of St. Mary’s Church, Bill lifted his voice as a member of the choir, and could often be found helping count collections or answering the phones with his characteristic warmth. Above all, Bill was a family man. He shared a beautiful life with his devoted wife of 53 years, Debra Gibbs, and was a proud and loving father to Derrick Gibbs (LaToya), LaKenya Gibbs, Kateria Peters, Kaleah Peters, and Kalaia Peters. He is also survived by his cherished grandson, Grayson Gibbs; his brother, Thomas Wright (Joyce); his special brother, Bernard Everette (Charlene); and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and God children who will miss him dearly. He leaves behind a lifelong circle of special friends, including Linwood Byrd, Tavarras Brown, Mr. Patchillo, his fellow Vietnam Veterans, and the coaches and families of the Port City Track Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings James Gibbs (Pearl), Dale Wright, and William "Joe" Wright; and his special brothers Leon Everette, Gordon "Butch" Everette, and Gene Clayton. Bill will be remembered as a man of integrity, a pillar of his community, and a cornerstone of his family. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of service and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
The family will receive friends and family after the service at Tileston School located at 400 Ann Street, Wilmington, NC
