Obituary

Graveside service will be 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at Calvary Memorial Cemetery.  Visitation is from 6-8:00 P.M. on Friday.

William Thomas Burnett, Jr. affectionately known as "Pookie" was born on August 31, 1939. in Wilmington, NC to the late William Burnett and Jettie R. Burnett. He entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 27, 2022.  William is preceded in death by his parents, (2) brothers, Rudolph Burnett, Alfred Burnett, Sr. and his sister, Mary E. Corbett.  He was a graduate of the Class of 1958 of Williston High School. He was also a faithful member of Mt. Olive AME Church until his health declined. During his lifetime, William worked at Babcock & Wilcox for 17 years. He was a Charter Member of the Wilmington Sportman's Club. He also worked at Tom's Drug Store and the International Longshoreman Association (ILA). He was also a member of the Dawson Street Baseball Team. "Pookie" had a special talent for carpentry. He could build anything, and he loved working with his hands.  He leaves to cherish his memories: a daughter, Jette' (Bernard) White of Wilmington, NC; a devoted and special partner, Lillian Lewis of the home; his sister, Carrie (Ernest) Faison of Wilmington, NC; brother-in-law, James Corbett of Wilmington, NC; three sons, Johnnie Lewis, Joseph Lewis, and James (Anita) Lewis all of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, Jada Ferrell of Greenville, NC, Kenneth Lewis, Katrina Robinson and Miracle Robinson all of Wilmington, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and close friends.
