Funeral service will be 12:00 Noon on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Mt. Calvary AME Church, Navassa, NC.  Burial will follow in the Mears Cemetery.  Visitation is from 5-7:00 PM on Friday at Mt. Calvary AME Church.

On Thursday evening March 27, 2025, God called his beloved daughter Vera Lynn Alston Parish to her eternal rest.  Lynn, as she was affectionately called by all who knew her, was born March 14, 1954, to the late Clarence R. Alston and Henreitta Myers Alston.  Lynn received her education in the Brunswick County School System and graduated from Leland High School class of 1972.  In 1981, she attended Cape Fear Community College, Leland Campus where she received her Certified Nurse's Assistant Certificate.  She was employed by New Hanover Regional Medical Center for 25 Years.  After leaving the hospital she was employed by Marshalls Department Store from 1998 until her early retirement in 2016.  At an early age, Lynn accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior then joined Mt Calvary AME Church in Navassa, NC. She was a member of the Gospel Choir and served on the Ladies Auxiliary Board until her health no longer permitted her to do so.  Lynn enjoyed working in the community.  She was a member of the Navassa Friendly Club and served on the Navassa Parade Committee for many years as the Queens Pageant Coordinator.  She also served as secretary/treasurer for the Explosion Disco Softball Team.  After retirement Lynn enjoyed watching her favorite TV shows, Snapped, First 48, and Lifetime, while snacking on circus peanuts, coconut bars, Boston baked beans, raisinets, and a cold Sundrop.  Lynn was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence R. and Henreitta Alston, three brothers, Clarence Alston, Jr., William Alston Sr., and Gerald Alston, Sr., two Sisters, Helen Mapson, Charlotte Fryar and close friend, Beverly Lofton Willis. Cherishing her memory are her husband, Gary Parish Sr., two daughters, Tamekia Alston and Janelle Parish, one son Gary Parish, Jr., two stepdaughters, Shatima Parish and Brianna Parish of Charlotte NC.  Three sisters Viola Smith of Plainfield, NJ, Terryce Willis (Eulis) and Charlena Alston of Navassa, NC and brother, Alvin Alston Sr (Doris) of Marietta, GA.  Eight grandchildren, Laryah (Markquez) of Charlotte NC, Tyler of Danville VA, Tari' Ahna of Raleigh NC, Savion, Jaden, Lorenzo, Garyn of Leland NC, and Takoda of Charlotte, NC. Godchildren, Wesley Hollis, Damien Jennings and Shantina Beatty.  Special friends, Wanda Hollis, Cleo Willis and Tiffany Smith.  Special Cousins, Glenda Andrews and Dorothy White, and a host of other relatives and friends.
