August 5, 1939, announced the birth of an extraordinary person named Theodore Collins Johnson. Known to most as Ted , he was born to the late Williana Greenhow Johnson and Jeff Johnson of Toana, Virginia. He peacefully passed away on the morning of Saturday February 26, 2022, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Ted was the youngest of nine children, Elsie Wallace, Virginia Holloway, Calvin Johnson, Arnold Johnson, Percell Johnson, Ernest Johnson, Clarence Johnson, Rosena Cotton; all of whom have preceded him in death. Ted was educated in the school system of Williamsburg, Virginia, graduating from Bruton Heights High School. Afterwards, he attended Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, earning a BS degree in Sociology. In addition to being an outstanding student, Ted excelled in football as a Center, Number 52. After graduating, he continued his education in post graduate studies at Chapel Hill and UNC-Wilmington. While at Johnson C. Smith, Ted met the love of his life, Flora Sampson. They entered into holy matrimony in 1962. To this union God granted three children, Theodore Collins, II, Lannell Chapri, and Jephraim Brett. Church was always a part of Ted's life. At an early age, Ted became a member of Chickahominy Baptist Church in Toana, Virginia. Upon moving to Wilmington, he joined Chestnut Street Presbyterian Church, USA under the leadership of Reverend Benjamin Baskerville. As a member of Chestnut Street, he served as an Elder, Superintendent of Sunday School, and former moderator of the Trustee Board. His service extended to his membership in the Adult Choir and the Men's Chorus (Mighty Men), and the Men's Counsel. During Ted's adult years he was mentored by the late Elder Willie Bowman as his Spiritual Father. Well-known and respected in his Wilmington Community, Ted positioned himself as a humanitarian and servant leader. He was a former Member of Hanover Masonic Lodge #14 (Master of Lodge), Past Potentate of Habib Temple # 159, Member of the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Wilmington, Member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc, and others civic organizations too numerous to mention. Before Ted began working with the City of Wilmington, he assisted in the construction of the impressive wall you now see at the entrance of UNCW. He later worked at Parks and Recreation as Assistant Supervisor of Recreational Centers. Later in his career, Ted was employed with the City of Wilmington as a Probation Officer for Juveniles. At the conclusion of his distinguished career, he served thirty years as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor with the Wilmington Department of Human Resources. Ted absolutely loved playing the card game, UNO, all the time with anyone willing to play. Another passion known to all who knew him was his love for cooking and eating. In the 1970's, Ted's favorite hobby was to hop on his CB radio to connect with others around the world. He was known for his CB handle as "Daddy Long Legs" at the Whopper Chopper Base!" Ted had a unique love for sports, particularly basketball. His athleticism included softball, horseshoes, you name it, any sports, he loved. He played basketball at the Martin Luther King Center with the fellows; young and old, and participated in the Senior Games by the Sea. In 2005 while playing in one of the Senior basketball games at Supply Elementary School gym, Ted collapsed on the gym floor. School Staff members, Darrilyn Morgan-Bellamy and Charles Snow were proficient in their use of the defibrillator, saving Ted's life. Directly resulting in this incident and featured in a local newspaper article, the county determined that every school gymnasium would be equipped with defibrillators as a proactive measure against heart attacks and traumatic incidents. Ted leaves to cherish his memories; his wife, Flora of 60 years; three children, Theodore, II (Tawana) of Charlotte, NC, Lannell Chapri of Holly Springs NC, and Jephraim Brett of Rex GA; four grandchildren, Viana and James Jordan, II of Holly Springs NC, Ka'la Jordan of Charlotte, NC and Jaylon Johnson (mother, Tene North) of Decatur GA; godson, Irving Tabb, Jr. (Valerie); loving nieces and nephews: Shirley Saunders (Lloyd), Tyrone Cotton, Pierre Cotton, D'Artagnan Cotton (Patty), Theo Donnelly Bennett, Tracy Mascoll, Frank Mascoll, James Johnson, and George Ernest Wallace; special sisters, Brenda Mott Pender and Delores Bryant (Sylvester), special brothers: Charles Allen, John Bellamy (Nancy), William Crummy, Avery Ellis (Rosemary) and Ronnie Williams; adopted daughters, Acquanetta McNeil and Eleanor Nichols; adopted sons, James Jordan, Will Merriweather, and Sterling Smith and a host of other nieces, nephews, and friends.
