Obituary

Graveside services will be held Saturday January 27, 2024, at 12:00 noon at the Mt. Ararat AME Church Cemetery.  Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service at the cemetery.

Mrs. Ruth Mae Spicer Nixon was born on October 20, 1932, in Onslow County, North Carolina, to the late Evelyn Bragg and stepfather, Alfred Bragg, Sr.  Ruth entered eternal rest on January 16, 2024. Ruth attended the New Hanover County public schools and graduated from Williston Industrial School.  She was a faithful member of Enoch Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Wilmington, North Carolina, for over fifty years, where she served in various roles, including Vacation Bible School and the Senior Choir.  Ruth was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, friend, aunt, cousin, church member, and community member.  In addition to her devotion to her family, Ruth co-owned and worked in Nixon's Oyster Plant, a successful seafood business and staple in Wilmington, North Carolina, for over fifty years. On November 16, 1953, Ruth married the love of her life, the late Cornelius E. Nixon. To this union, six children were born:  four daughters, Carolyn Kaham (Jerone) of Raleigh, North Carolina, Jo Ann Bloodworth of Charlotte, North Carolina; Sandra Nixon and Alice Nixon of Wilmington, North Carolina; and two sons, Ronald Nixon (Gwendolyn) and Cornelius E. Nixon, III (Charity) of Wilmington, North Carolina. Ruth had fourteen grandchildren: Shelley Nixon-Green (Lorne), Maurice Sanders (deceased), Katrina Bloodworth, James Bloodworth, Marcus Sanders, Ronald Nixon II (Karess), Micheal-Chan Nixon (Tyiesha), Monica Sanders, Alicia Nixon (inseparable and caretaker), Sherish Galloway, Tommy Heddrick, Saudia Nixon, Samarah Robinson, and Nigel Nixon; thirty-one great-grandchildren; brother, Joseph Spicer, Sr. (Kathy); special nieces, Cynthia Murphy and Angie Nixon and a host of relatives and friends to cherish her memory.  She was preceded in death by her husband Cornelius Nixon; grandchild, Maurice Sanders; sister, Mary McMillan and brothers, Alfred Bragg, Jr. and David Spencer, all of Wilmington, North Carolina.
