Visitation is 6:00-8:00 P.M. on Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Martha Marie Spicer Evans was born on Friday, September 26, 1941. Martha was one of six children born to Mr. James Edward Spicer and Mrs. Alice Gray Brown Spicer. Martha was born, raised, and educated in Wilmington, NC. She was a proud 1959 graduate of Williston Industrial High School. She went on to receive her post-education from Duke University's Nursing Program in Durham, NC. She received her Practical Nursing License upon graduation and had a long-standing career in retirement homes, private duty, Gordon Dentistry, and New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Martha met her loving and devoted husband, the late Edward Lee Evans, Sr., at the VFW, where a $5 loan became a lifetime of happiness. Martha and Ed married on June 3, 1961. Martha accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. She was a lifelong Price Cathedral A.M.E. Zion Church member, where she sang on the L.A. Jacobs Mass Choir and Senior Choir. She served with the Y.A.M.S., Women's Home & Overseas Missionary Society, Home Mission Workers, and was the Supply Department's Captain. She also worked tirelessly in the community as a member of the Order of The Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliate, The Daughters of Isis, and a local nursing organization. Martha enjoyed caring for her family as she was everyone's nurse when they were sick, and cooked when they were hungry. She enjoyed spending time with her family, church family, and her Williston classmates. Martha enjoyed traveling, shopping, and hosting events at her home. Martha was preceded in death by her sisters, Judy Ann Berry and Alice A. Smith, and her brothers, Preston Walker and James E. Spicer, Jr. Martha leaves a legacy in the hearts of her three children, Angela Evans-Collins (Glen) Edward Lee Evans, Jr. (Tracy), and Sherrye Evans-Kirby (Charles). Six grandchildren, Aviqon Graham, Keana Graham-Schmidt (Ben), LaShai Evans, Edward AJ Kirby (Imani), Evan Kirby, and Destiny Collins. Two great-grandchildren, Aayden White, and Ja'lyn White. One brother, Leon Walker. Three special friends, Geraldine Bennett, Dorothy Pridgen, and Mae Francis McGee, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
