A Life Dedicated to Sports, Education, and Youth Empowerment: Margarita Williams, the daughter of the late John H. Williams and the late Beatrice Williams, was born in New Hanover County, Wilmington, North Carolina on August 14, 1948. Ms. Williams received her education from Williston Senior High school, Fayetteville State University and Montclair State University. Margarita lived her life in devotion to family, education, and service. For over 30 years more than 25 of them at Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark she taught Physical and Health Education, and Driver's Education. She was a beloved track and bowling coach, sports supporter, and mentor of countless student athletes. As pillar of the Shabazz community, helping to organize and supporting various events through fund raising and mentoring homecoming celebrations, and making sure every student felt seen, valued, and cared for. A Legacy That Reaches Beyond the Classroom: Margarita was also a foster parent through the Division of Developmental Disabilities and Child Protection (DDCP), opening her home to young people who needed a safe and loving place to stay. No child was ever turned away. She gave hope and purpose to students who faced homelessness or family struggles, offering not just shelter but the kind of guidance, love, and structure that shaped their futures. Many of her students considered her a second mother. Known for her tough love and quick wit, Margarita was famous for her playful expressions: "You better get your little fast tail over here on this gym floor" or "Don't make me call your parents, I probably taught them, and maybe even your grandparents"! She could make you laugh while also holding you accountable, and she had an extraordinary ability to bring out the best in young people. Her talents went beyond teaching. As a former student athlete, she was superior majorette, who could do cartwheels and splits, and often trained younger students and siblings to join the school band and perform with pride. She was deeply respected by administrators, fellow teachers, security staff, custodians, parents, and most importantly her students. She was often called upon to mediate conflicts, and her ability to resolve disputes left both sides satisfied. Within the community, she volunteered, taught summer programs and worked with rehabilitation and homeless shelters, and served as an evangelist/missionary for various churches. She was a proud member of the NJEA and the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Delta Pi Chapter, and a devoted member of Williams Chapel Holiness Church. She inspired others through her leadership, generosity, and unshakable belief in every student's potential. Lasting Love and Family: Margarita's legacy was honored by her devoted son, Kevin Williams, her cherished grandchildren, Jalen, Madison, and Isaiah Williams. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Williams, and his wife, Almeta. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy W. Freeman (late husband Fred Freeman), and her brothers, Rev. Horace Williams and Levi Williams. Plus, a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, former students, and dear friends who will carry her memory in their hearts. Margarita's legacy is one of love, service, and faith. She was a champion for the underdog, a mentor to the overlooked, and a second mother to generations of students. She will be deeply missed and forever loved
