Funeral service will be held 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Warner Temple AME Zion Church. Burial will be at 3:00 P.M. on Monday, February 13, 2023, at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation is from 5:30-8:00 P.M. on Friday at the funeral home.
Lewis Chester Greene, was born December 20, 1944 in New Hanover County to the late Irene G. Nixon. Affectionally known as Chester. He was raised in the Scotts Hill Community and with his family attended Old Scotts Hill AME Church. On Monday, February 6, 2023, God whispered, and he gently slipped away while at home. Chester was preceded in death by his parents, sister Celie, and brothers, Thomas, Lynn, Edwin and Johnny. His best dog, BooBear.
Chester was educated in the public schools of New Hanover County, graduating from Williston Senior High. After high school, he served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. Chester was employed with Dupont De Nemours, Inc to then DAK Americas for forty-two years, where he held several positions within the company. He was a member of Giblem Lodge #2 F&AM PHA and a member of the Wilmington Sportsman Club
Chester united in holy matrimony to Mary Harrell and to their union was three daughters. As a young couple, they joined and raised their family at First Baptist Missionary Church. He loved the Lord and worked in the church when possible. He was a member of the JJ Howze Choir, Transportation Driver and Trustee. Chester loved his wife of 57 years, daughters and the joy of his heart, Larry. He took pride in being the ultimate provider for them and his family. Chester was smart, kind, quick wit and loved tinkering around the house and in the yard.
Chester leaves to cherish his memory: the love of his life Mary Harrell Greene, his daughters Pamela M. Greene, Belinda Greene and Melinda Greene; grandson Larry J C Greene and granddaughter Asia Green; his siblings, Roxanna Nixon, and Glenn Nixon (Rosemary), all of Wilmington, NC; Ronnie Nixon, Hammond, LA; Michelle Nixon-Corbett (Myles), Baltimore, MD, and Lisa Nixon Joles (Baron), Fredericksburg, VA. Sisters-in-law Rosa A. Greene, Mildred Ellerby, Willie Washington, Daisy Nesbitt, Cherry Pearson, Betty Robinson (Eugene), Dale Ford; brothers-in-law Reuben Pearson (Marilyn) and Timothy Pearson. along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
