Joyce Magdalyn Harvey, born November 16, 1960, adopted daughter of Burdell Harvey Sr and Mary Ida Harvey, died on Friday, September 27, 2024. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Burdell Harvey, Jr. and Peter Harvey. She is survived by her sisters. Mary Ann Davidson, of Tampa, FL, Ernestine Keels of Detroit, Michigan, and Marie Wrisborne of Wilmington, NC. Beautiful with a contagious laugh and social personality, Joyce lived life on her terms. In her youth she declined a full scholarship to Notre Dame. She graduated from stewardess school but did not want to become a stewardess. Instead, she decided to pursuit her dream of starting a family of her own. She wanted to get married and become a mother. Joyce fought her way through a life of bad decisions, repeated betrayal and rejection. While working at Merck Medco and raising her children alone in Tampa, FL she became sick. This illness prevented her from working full time, so she moved her family back to Wilmington, NC and followed her dreams of becoming a DJ. Taking up the moniker DJ Hootie, she played regular sets at local bars and clubs including Port City Wheelers, Squeaky's and the Sportsman Club. Due to her hard work and social personality DJ Hootie became a favorite among many people in town and often booked private gigs in Wilmington and surrounding areas. Many people referred to her as Hootie. Hootie often tried to help others by coaching them in the DJ business or lending equipment. She brought joy to others through music and food. She loved her role in the community. There were many moments of happiness along with the disappointing joys of life, marriage and motherhood. She can stop fighting now. We pray she finds all that eluded her in life. She will be missed. Joyce leaves behind two daughters, Shanta Bellamy and Natesa Wade and stepdaughter, LaKisha Trottie; four beloved grandchildren, Blaise "Turtle" Bellamy (Shanta Bellamy), Jayleigh "Rabbit" Wade (Natesa Wade), Okenon "Squirrel" Graham-Wilson and Yazmine "Ferrett" DeVone (LaKisha Trottie).  Joyce always had a house full of kids spending the night. This continued even after her own children were grown. Many of those children held a special place in her heart. We may leave some names out with no malicious intent, just listing who she had with her the most. Cory "CoCo" Wrisborne, Eric "E.B" Duncan, Matthew "Pig" Duncan, Fred "Teddy" Butler, Dante "Bear" Stukes, and Giovanni "Grasshopper" Wrisborne. She loved you all as her own.
