Funeral service will be held 3:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at the Willie L. Shaw Jr. Memorial Chapel. Visitation is from 5:30-8:00 P.M. on Monday.

On Wednesday, July 27, 2022, John Henry Mills, a loving father of four children, passed away at the age of 81.  John was born on November 30, 1941, in Wilmington, NC.  He is one of eleven siblings born to the late Mr. Jesse and Amelia Hussey Mills.  He is proceeded in death by this sisters, Joyce, Evelyn, Margaret and brothers, Ronald, Thomas, Kenneth, and Jessie, Jr.  John grew up in Wilmington, NC and later joined the Army where he was stationed at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, WA.  He later worked for the US Postal Service for over 20 years, until his retirement.  John and Betty Martin Mills had one daughter Karen De'Shell Mills.  He also adopted and helped Betty raise Lamar, Lonnie and Deon Mills, Betty's children from a previous marriage.  John has a passion for fishing.  He also loved to bet on his "numbers" aka the Lottery and attended horse and dog racing events.  Jon loved to watch football, golf and basketball.  He was an awesome cook.  His most memorable foods were pecan pie from scratch, BBQ baked beans and ribs.  John was also an avid music lover and collector of various types of music.  He had an array of music, but his ultimate favorite was jazz.  His collection would be worth thousands today.  He was also known for his quick wit, his infectious smile, and his kind compassionate spirit.  John Henry Mills leaves to cherish his sweet memory, his daughter, Karen De'Shell Mills; son-in-law, (David Burg) of San Diego, CA; his remaining siblings, Barbara Jean Sourzes of New York, NY, Larry Mills of Wilmington, NC and Gwendolyn Phillips of Charlotte, NC; his grandchildren, Audreal Gillett of Portland, OR, Jacine Gillett of Tempe, AZ; adopted sons, Lamar Rouse of San Diego, CA, Lonnie Mills of Houston, TX and the late Deon Mills of Seattle, WA; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family members and friends.
