Funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. on Friday, November 21, 2025, at St. James AME Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at St. James.
John James Baldwin, Jr., affectionately known as "Man-Tan," entered into eternal rest on November 13, 2025. Born to the late James Baldwin, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Hardmon Baldwin. John was a beloved son, brother, husband, uncle, cousin, and friend whose presence brought joy, laughter, and strength to all who knew him. John received his early education through the New Hanover County School System and later completed his studies through the United States Army, where he continued developing the discipline and character that shaped his life. He was a man who loved deeply, lived fully, and valued every moment shared with the people he cared about. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sherron Elizabeth Baldwin. John was known for his warm heart, easy smile, and unwavering loyalty. He truly enjoyed spending time with The Rock Hill Boys, sharing stories, laughter, and memories that will live on forever. A devoted family man, John especially loved cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles, enjoying time by the water fishing, and relaxing while hunting or playing a good game of pool. His passion for music was undeniable. and among all the artists he admired, Frankie Beverly held a special place in his heart. He leaves to cherish his everlasting memory, the love of his life, his devoted wife Rose Baldwin of Wilmington, NC, stepdaughter: Doris Godette of Greensboro NC. He is also survived by his brother George Bernard "Bug" Baldwin; his sister Peggy Dianna "Chinney" Baldwin (Muleck Waller); grandchildren, Mileah Godette (NC State), Michael Godette (A&T); nephews Joeseph, Walter, Monte, and Louis Baldwin of Philadelphia, PA, Maurice "Mook" Jones of Bronx, NY; nieces Jazmine, Muleka, and Amber Waller of Bronx, NY; great nieces Samirah, Krisette, Nia. and Cali of Bronx, and Beautiee of Philadelphia, PA; great nephews Jarell and David Robert, Jr. (Dre)of Bronx. NY. He also leaves behind his loving sisters-in-law; Annie Mae Hutchinson (Frank) of Greensboro, NC; Therese Robinson of Wilmington, NC; Ruth Connor of Stratford, CT. Sharon Jones (Anthony) of Raleigh, NC, and brothers-in-law, Robert Lee Robinson of Winston-Salem, NC, Lawrence Jefferson of Indianapolis, IN, Ray Jefferson of Stamford, CT, and Keith Adamson of Raleigh NC. John's legacy extends to a host of additional family members and countless friends who loved him dearly. He shared special bonds with Alexander Holliday, Louis Whitted, and The Gaines Family, whose friendship he treasured throughout his life. John James "Man-Tan" Baldwin, Jr., will be remembered for his warmth, his loyalty, his humor, and the love he poured into the lives of those around him. His memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace.
