Jennie Price Shepard, a devoted servant of God, educator, community leader, and beloved matriarch, peacefully entered eternal rest surrounded by love and faith.  Born in Reidsville, North Carolina, in the Piedmont region of the state, Jennie Price Shepard was the daughter of the late Sam Sydney Price and Katherine "Kat" Price.  She received her early education in the Rockingham County School System and was educated at Booker T. Washington High School.  She later matriculated at Winston-Salem State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, and continued her studies at East Carolina University.  In 1964, Jennie relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina, where she began a distinguished career in education.  She served as a teacher in the Pender County and later in the New Hanover County School System, teaching at Mary Washington Howe, EA Alderman, and William H. Blount Elementary Schools.  During her more than thirty years as an educator, she also mentored many new teachers and remained a role model to generations of students. She retired from public education after twenty-eight years of faithful service.  A lifelong woman of faith, Elder Shepard was a devoted member of Chestnut Street Presbyterian Church (USA) for nearly forty years.  Her service to the church was extensive and exemplary.  She served as Moderator of the Deacon Board, Elder, Clerk of Session. Moderator of Presbyterian Secretary of the Senior Choir, Director of Youth Fellowship, President of the Gospel Choir, Moderator of the Christian Education Committee, and a member of the Pastor's Nominating   Committee.  She also continued to serve as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, a member of the Worship Committee, and a member of both the Senior and Gospel Choirs.  Beyond the local church, Elder Shepard served the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina as a member of the Grievance Committee, served on multiple ordination committees, and participated in ordination services as a liturgist.  She attended meetings, workshops, and activities of the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic and the General Assembly.  Jennie's commitment to service extended throughout the wider community.  She was active with Jack & Jill of America, Inc., New Hanover County Democratic Women, Las Amigas, Inc., the Retired Teachers Association of the Lower Cape Fear, SEANC, and numerous civic organizations.  She also served as president of the E.A. Laney PTA, Vice President of Church Women United, and Sergeant-at-Arms of the Wilmington Chapter of the Continental Society, Inc. Her volunteer service included work with the Cape Fear Museum as a docent, Meals on Wheels, the New Hanover County Health Department, and tutoring in the New Hanover County School System. In her later years, she was employed by Brunswick Community College in the Department of Continuing Education.  Jennie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo Edsell Shepard; her son, Courtney Pierre Shepard; her sisters, Sylvia Price Kellam and Mary Alice Price Robinson; and her brother, Thomas Edward Price.  She leaves to cherish her memory one grandson, DeVaughn Marquez Shepard; her daughter-in-love, Carla Hansley; nieces Nicole Sellars (Jayla Sellars and Ta'nia Frink), Shemeka Johnson (Timothy Johnson), and Laurel Robinson; her goddaughter, Cershila Kelly Brown; loving friends Evelyn Kelly (Calvin Kelly), Sadie McAlister, Flora Johnson, and Julia Bibbs; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends.  Elder Shepard lived by the motto, "Let me live in a house by the side of the road, where the races of men go by".  She firmly believed that every blessing she received came by the grace and mercy of God and that all glory belonged not to her, but to God.  To God be the Glory.
