Funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Mount Nebo Baptist Church.  Burial will follow in Calvary Memorial Cemetery.  Visitation is from 4:30-8:00 P.M. on Friday at the funeral home.

James Edward Burney, eldest child of the late Freddie Lee and Edna M. Burney, was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, June 13, 1944. He quietly transitioned from this earthly life on May 23, 2024, in Fort Worth, Texas. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his brother and sister, McArthur, and Diane Burney.  James was educated in the New Hanover County School System, graduating from Williston Senior High School, in the class of 1965.  Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the Army Airborne for three years receiving an Honorable Discharge. He also served in the Reserve.  James was later employed by the General Motors Company in Rahway, New Jersey, where he worked for more than 28 years until he officially retired.  In 2002, he moved back home to Wilmington, North Carolina. He attended Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church. James leaves to cherish his fondest memories: two daughters, Erricka Tameka Mayfield (Dereak) of Fort Worth, Texas and Tanisha Jones (Eric Exoue) of Piscataway, New Jersey; six grandchildren: Javon, Dereak Jr. and Morgan Mayfield; Sinai, Jossai and Malachi Ekoue; two precious great-granddaughters, Anaya Mayfield and Gia Drummond; sister and brother, Mary McIntyre (Willie) of Warner Robins, Georgia and Larrey Burney (Belinda), of Wilmington, North Carolina; aunt, Rose Ann Bryant (Alfred) of Leland, North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
