Ira Lee Hamby, a dedicated member of the Wilmington community and a beloved figure to many, passed away on May 10, 2026, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born on October 20, 1958, in Wilmington, Ira devoted his life to serving others and creating lasting memories with family and friends. His journey began in the New Hanover County school system, where he received his education, laying the foundation for a life marked by kindness and commitment.

Throughout his years, Ira was actively engaged in meaningful pursuits that enriched both his own life and the lives of those around him. He was an active participant at RHA Health Services and faithfully volunteered each week with the food pantry ministry at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, exemplifying his deep compassion and generosity. Beyond these noble efforts, Ira enjoyed simple pleasures—riding in the car, sharing good meals, playing cards, listening to music, taking naps, and spending cherished time with his family and friends.

Ira’s life was shaped by his strong family ties. He was predeceased by his father, Charles Frank Hamby; his mother, Elder Jurenia Johnson Hamby; his brother, Charlie Frank Hamby, Sr.; and his sister, Darlene Hamby. Among his surviving family members are his sister, Florine J. Davis; sister-in-law, Annie Hamby; aunt, Lela Flood; uncles Top Keaton and Teresa; and nieces and nephews including Apostle Dr. Charles W. Davis II and Melissa, Michael Coe and Janice, Marlo H. Mack and Antonio, Charlie Hamby, Jr. and Tonya, Lorenzo Hamby and Bernetta, Quaterrio Hamby, and Trevor Spicer. Ira also counted among his close spiritual sisters Judy Best, Evangelist Delphine James, and Pastor Susie Briggs. A special note is owed to his devoted caregiver, Acquanetta McNeil, whose compassionate care was a blessing in his life.
