On Tuesday afternoon May 3, 2022, while driving down a sunny highway, God in his infinite wisdom and unfailing power called Sam home to Eternal Rest. "Sam" and "Booman" as he was affectionally called by many, 62 years old, was born to the late Herbert S. Riggins, Sr. and Ida Clarice Riggins. He was the youngest of eight children. Sam graduated from Acme-Delco High School in Delco, North Carolina in 1978. He went to Fayetteville State University for a one semester and decided college was not the way for him to go. He enlisted in the United States Army on March 27, 1979 and was honorably discharged June 30, 1992. His specialty was Defense Acquisition Radar Operator. Sam was married to Margie Righnhart for over 30 years and had one son Pierre. After the Army Sam worked at Buffalo Niagara International Airport, Smithfield Packing and International Paper. Sam was well known in the Bolton, Wilmington and the surrounding community. He loved God and went to all the churches in the community. He was a long-time member of Walter's Chapel AME Zion Church in Bolton, North Carolina. He was a hard worker and would help others out when needed. He did not meet strangers, talked to everyone he saw; women, men, children, Black, White, German, everyone he came in contact with. It was hard to get away from him once he started talking. He loved to dress and was a smooth dancer. His favorite saying was: "Good God a mighty and Lord have mercy". Sam really loved his family and we loved him too. Sam was a loving son, father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. His father, Herbert S. Riggins, Sr.; mother, Ida Clarice "Teen" Riggins; brother, Gregory Bellamy; sister, Claretta Williams and niece, April Bellamy, all preceded him in death.
He leaves a heartfelt family to cherish his memory: one son whom he loved dearly, Pierre Riggins (Alysha) of Germany now Fort Meade, Maryland; 5 sisters: Doris K. Wilson, Minnie C. Peterson (Johnnie), Redahlia Riggins, Dorene R. Crumpler (Donell) and Linda Riggins Rhodes (Julius); 2 grandchildren, Pharez and Azariah Riggins; 12 nieces and nephews: Derrick Peterson, Gabriel Peterson, Earl Wilson III, Gregory Bellamy, Jr. Tequila W. James, Lynde Overstreet, Satrinda Peterson, Shameka W. Davis, Twila Romes Josey, Donell Crumpler III, Jonathan and Jarrell Bellamy; 3 aunts: Elnora Gore, Nadira Muhammad and Edith Riggins; his special friends, Al Josey and also Cherelle Gainey who he helped raise; cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, devoted relatives and other special friends.
