Gwendolyn Marie Harris Stevens was born on December 7, 1950, in Richmond, Virginia to the late Mable and Lawrence Harris. She was preceded in death by our mother, father, and brother, Linwood Harris. Following an extended illness, she was called by God to life everlasting on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 7:04 pm. Gwen, as we lovingly called her, was educated in the New Hanover County schools. She graduated from John T. Hoggard High School in 1969. After graduating from high school, she married William Stevens, Jr. "Steve" on April 10, 1972. They started their family and moved to California to follow Steve's military career. They moved frequently across the United States before returning to Wilmington in the early 1980s. To this union, they were blessed with four beautiful children. Gwen worked for Merritt Holland as an administrative assistant until their closure. She was also employed by the New Hanover County school board as a teacher's assistant. Gwen always welcomed people in her home and was known as the community "mom." She loved children and treated them as her own. She was the life of the party, always telling jokes. She leaves to cherish her loving memory: her children, Tamala, Shawnta, William III (Stevie), and Kevin; her eight grandchildren: Brandon, Marquise, Ashley, Ka'Shayla, Jessika, Marquita, Kevin, and Montez; an uncle, Kelly Smith, Jr. (Sheila) of Atlanta, Georgia; five nephews: Demarcus (special), Tristan, Tony, Derrick, and Eddie; five nieces: Yolanda, Tashima, Tameka, Teresa, and Atabaa; two cousins, Sonja Redd (William) and Faye Booker (John), and a host of other relatives and friends.
