Sunsets are beautiful, and so it was on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, when Gladys M. Saunders departed this earthy life at Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Gladys Mae Simpson Saunders was born December 4, 1927, at Acme, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late James and Mary Frances Simpson.
Mother Saunders was educated in the Public Schools of Columbus County, a member of the Armour High Class of 1947. She also attended Fayetteville Teachers College. She was married to the late William Henry Saunders of Wilmington, NC.
Mother Saunders accepted Christ as her Lord and personal Saviour at an early age in life. Accordingly, she grew and matured in her walk with the Lord by surrounding herself with fellow Christians. She was a devoted member of Spring Green Missionary Baptist Church. Throughout her devoted membership, she was dutiful and served faithfully on numerous committees: Jr., Senior and Spiritual Choirs, Daughters of Zion, Usher Board President, and Church Secretary. Her greatest joy was organizing and directing the "BUDS OF PROMISE" youth choir. Some of her favorite songs were "This Little Light of Mine, Because He Lives, and Lordy, Lordy Won't You Come by Here".
Mother Saunders was affectionately known as "Gladdie Mae" by her family. She leaves to cherish her memories, one daughter Nancy Saunders of the home, one sister Alma Jackson, Riegelwood, NC, two brothers, Herman (Mary) Simpson, Riegelwood, NC, and John Simpson, Hempstead, NY, one Uncle William (Annie) Brown and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Two special nieces/daughters that joined Team Gladdie Mae to help and assist with her caregiving, Janie Simpson, and Iris Graham.
