Mrs. Gladys Irene Nixon, daughter of the late James Henry Moore and the late Amelia Nixon Moore was born on November 2, 1923 in Old Town, North Carolina. She departed this life on February 13, 2024. Mrs. Nixon received her early education at the Pine Level Public School system in Brunswick County. Life was hard back then, but with a family of 11 children and her father and mother, they managed to eke out a decent living. Their father and brothers sold the products grown on their farm and fish that they caught, at the farmers market in Wilmington on Saturday mornings. When their father passed away, the family relocated to Wilmington in search of a better life. When the family moved to Wilmington, some of them joined St. Andrew AME Zion Church. Mrs. Gladys held several positions in the church and served on various boards. She served as Secretary of the church, Secretary for the Leaders meetings, President of the Senior Choir, a member of the Stewardess Board and served as a Deaconess.  She was a member of The Grand United Order of Salem.  She also worked at Century Mills for many years. Mrs. Gladys was married to Mr. William Nixon and they raised 5 children together: Geraldine, Willie, Linda, Romona and James. Mrs. Gladys started making the Freezes for her children to keep them cool on hot summer days.  When the word got out that she could make those delicious Freezes, she started making enough for other children also. She was dubbed "The Freeze Lady" and her "hustle" lasted until her health began to wane.  She did not want to let her customers down but the family knew it was time for her to retire from the Freeze business. She loved solving word puzzles, reading and watching baseball games. She was an Atlanta Braves fan. She kept up with political news on CNN and would eagerly express her take on current issues. She was a great cook; her pecan pie and pineapple cake could have easily won blue ribbons in any baking contest. On Sundays, Mrs. Gladys would cook enough food to feed anyone that dropped by after church.  She was a kind and loving spirit who didn't feel that she did anything special by feeding people but those who were fortunate enough to put their feet under her table, knew how special she was. Mrs. Gladys was preceded in death by the following family members: husband, William Nixon; father, James Henry Moore, mother, Amelia Moore; son, James Nixon and daughters, Geraldine Moore, Linda Nixon Brown, and Romona Nixon; all 10 of her siblings: her brothers: Rev. Aaron Moore (Anna), Harlee Moore (Hattie), Herbert Moore, Moses Moore (Lois), Adolph Moore (Beatrice) and Thomas Moore and her sisters: Joneita Jinwright (Samuel), Lucille Moore, Christabelle Moore, and Louisa Moore.  She leaves to cherish her precious memories: Son, Willie Nixon {Linda}; Wilmington, NC; Grandchildren: Kevin Nixon (Tina), Wilmington, NC; Maretha Lewis (Reggie) Navassa, NC; DeMarcus Nixon (Wilmington, NC; Sabrina Spencer-Monroe (O'Donivinn), Wilmington, NC; Janetta Nixon, Wilmington, NC; Tiara Pollard (Robert) Wilmington, NC; James N ixon II, Wilmington, NC; Donnie Copeland.
