Funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at Johnson Chapel AME Zion Church; 1882 Lincoln Rd. NE, Leland, NC.  Burial will follow in the St. Thomas Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

Fred Douglas Waddell, known as "Stumpy", son of the late Sylvester and Rosa Lee Waddell was born on May 16, 1940, in Wilmington, North Carolina.  He quietly and peacefully departed this life on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at home. Fred attended Brunswick County Schools and graduated from Lincoln High School with honors.  He was a retiree of E.I. Dupont.  Fred loved to play his guitar. His favorite song was "Beyond The Sunset".  Fred was preceded in death by family members, Wilbur "Ash", Carl "Mickey", Sylvester Jr. "Bubba", Ernestine Hill and Beatrice Hill.  He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving wife of 63 years, Eva Vanneal Waddell; four sons, Frederick Darryl (Charisse) of Kennasaw, GA, Fulton Dion (Sharon) of Durham, NC, Felmon Dwain (Edna) of High Point, NC and Reginald Small of Cary, NC; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, David "Teedie" of Leland, NC; three sisters, Helen of Leland, NC, Lola and Angela of Wilmington, NC; 2 sisters-in-law, Susie Moore and Mary Jane Bordeaux of Winnabow, NC; 1 brother-in-law, Treadwell Bell (Edith) of Leland, NC; 1 godson; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. God knew the load was getting heavy, the hills so hard to climb.  He gently closed his weary eyes and said, "Come child of mine".
