Funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, 6761 Wrightsville Avenue. Visitation is from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home. There will be a visitation in Savannah, Ga at the Bonaventure Funeral Home, Williams and Williams Chapel from 10:30 am till 11:30 am. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Savannah, Ga.
Mrs. Evelena Berry Jennings, daughter of the late Norman Berry and the late Marie Butler Berry, was born January 11, 1934, in Branchville, South Carolina. She departed this earthly life on July 13, 2024. She is now absent from her body, and present with her Lord. Mrs. Jennings received her childhood education at Florence Street Elementary School, Kyler Junior High and completed her high school education at Alfred Ely Beach High School. Under the tutorage of the Madam Walker Institute, Evelena received her cosmetology certificate. She used her talents to inspire and motivate others. Evelena accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at 6 years old. Saved and sanctified, she began her Christian journey. In 1955, Evelena was united in holy matrimony to the late Ervin Jefferson Jennings, Jr. To this union, five children were born. As a wife and mother, she held several positions in the different chapels where they served for 25 years in the armed forces. Evelena had the opportunity to travel to different countries while her husband served in the United States Army. Jerusalem, Barcelona, Spain, Frankfurt and Heidelberg, Germany, Berlin and Paris, France are just a few places she visited. After receiving her Associate Degree, Evelena worked as a substitute teacher in the Nolanville, Texas School District. She eventually owned and operated Kiddies Korner, a daycare center. Evelena was an accomplished writer of poems, poetry, short stories and plays. Several of her books have been published. She was a Distinguished Member of the International Society of Poets. She has received Honorary Literary Certificates and Awards. Evelena has been a member of the Hosannah Chapter No. 80 Order of the Eastern Star PHA 131 North Carroll Street Enterprise, Alabama 36330 since 1994. She held the position of Assistant Coordinator for over 10 years. Evelena was a tireless volunteer. One organization that was dear to her heart was the 13th Street House for Women, in Wilmington, North Carolina. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Retired Pastor LTC Chaplain Ervin Jefferson Jennings, Jr. and sisters, Clara Lee Goins and Lethea Mae Berry. She leaves to cherish her most precious memories: her children, Elaine Campbell (Le Roy) of Ocala, FL, Ervin Jennings, III of Killeen, TX, Eleanor Pedford of Wilmington, NC, Earline Connolly (Kevin) of Fort Worth, TX, and Ernest Jennings of Dallas, TX; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Earl Jennings of Savannah, GA and Verner Jennings (Gertrude) of Savannah, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a loving supportive church family, neighbors and friends.
