Funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the Willie L. Shaw Jr. Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation is from 5:30-8:00 P.M. on Friday.
Elizabeth Maddox Powers, daughter of the late Sadie Moore and Freddie McNeil was born on March 3, 1931. She lived a long and joy filled life and peacefully passed away on April 18, 2022, at the age of 91. Elizabeth was born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina. She married Freddie Powers Sr. They were married for 42 years and raised their family in Wilmington. Elizabeth work for Belk Berry for 23 years until she retired. Elizabeth always loved being in the company of her family. She talked to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on a regular basis, having long conversations filled with laughter and sometimes a little tear. In her later years she also enjoyed conversations with her older sister Margaret and her younger brother Bill, keeping strong ties with her siblings. Giving words of encouragement, solid advice, and leading by example, Elizabeth was a strong pillar for her family. She always ensured her family's wellbeing and did so with unconditional love. Being a very giving person, Elizabeth took care of her mother, Sadie Moore for several years. Elizabeth enjoyed the time she shared with her mother until Mrs. Moore passed peacefully in her sleep. Elizabeth left this world, her family and friends with a long list of happy and unforgettable memories. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Freddie Powers, Sr. who passed away on April 17, 2000; her daughters, Brenda G. Maddox and Linda C. Powers and her sister, Minnie Council of Wilmington, NC.
Elizabeth lived to see four generations. She is survived by her 3 sons and 3 daughters: Diane Dawson (Wilbert) of Detroit, MI, David J. Maddox (Bernadette) of Wilmington, NC, Sheila C. Miller (Leroy) of Chicago, IL, Jacqueline P. Smith of Raleigh, NC, Freddie Powers, Jr. of Wilmington, NC and Alan W. Powers (Pam) of Wilmington, NC; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters and 1 brother, Margarette Kennedy and Juanita Murray both of Chicago, Il, and William E. Maddox of Portsmouth, Virginia.
