Dinah Fashaw, a beloved neighborhood mom transitioned on January 14, 2023, in comfort and surrounded by love in Wilmington, North Carolina.
An eternal lover and caregiver, Dinah was born Dinah Danette Fashaw in 1955, in Wilmington, NC to the parents of Merlene (Fashaw) Peters and Eddie Tripp. She was raised and loved by her mother, Uncle George, and Carrie Fashaw. Dinah was educated in New Hanover County Schools and spiritually fed at Price Cathedral A.M.E. Zion church and then Union Missionary Baptist Church where she remained a dedicated member.
Her earliest memories consisted of climbing trees and playing marbles with her friends, frequently resulting in her mother calling her out of the trees or her skinning her knees playing marbles. She carried this playfulness and youthfulness into motherhood. As a mother, she was amazing and ahead of her time, she believed children have a voice and deserved unconditional love. Dinah displayed this time and time again taking multiple families into her home. Over the years she has fed and clothed a multitude of neighborhood kids, simply and only because she loved them.
She extended this comfort and care to the children and staff of New Hanover County Schools for over 27 years. Her last years were spent with the children and staff of Laney High School, where she was able to retire as the assistant cafeteria manager and continue to do what she loved best sharing love and feeding children.
Dinah lived her life with the singular purpose of being helpful to those around her. Ask anyone next to you at this time, and they will be able to tell you how she gave of herself without question or reservation. That didn't mean she didn't talk a little "junk" to you, but if she had it to give to you, then you had it to have from her. The type of love she had for others could only be described as a divine gift. Even as she lay in her transitional space, her last sentence was "Tell them I love them".
Dinah was proceeded in death by her parents: Merlene (Fashaw) Peters, and Eddie Tripp, and her siblings: Roy Fashaw, Carrie McKoy, and Jackie Peters.
She leaves to honor and cherish her legacy a sister: Renee Peters; her children: Delvinia Fashaw (Marcus Sanders); Davie Fashaw, Daniela Williams (Sean Williams); grandchildren: Darmont Smith, Desmond Smith, Quashawn Smith, Mirakle Fashaw, Veneshia Stroughters, Devante Fashaw and Langston Williams and a host of great-grandchildren; her close and special friends Jerry Mitchell, Sloane White, Geraldine Sidbury, Elizabeth Yates and Jacqueline Watkins as well as a number of aunts, uncles, cousins. Dinah Fashaw will be cherished and missed by more friends and loved ones than we will ever know.
