Funeral service will be held 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Mt. Roney Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Pine Forest Cemetery. Visitation is from 5:30-8:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Bettie Lee Johnson Jenkins was born November 10, 1919, to the late Evans and Mary Inez Tindall Johnson, in Wilmington, North Carolina. She departed her earthly life to her eternal heavenly home, on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 104 years old. Bettie was raised in Brooklyn/Tank Town in Wilmington, North Carolina, and lived in the area throughout her life. She received her formal education in the New Hanover County public school system. Attending Peabody and graduating from Williston Industrial School, as a Williston Tiger. She was a cheerleader and recounted many stories of cheering her team to victory, chanting, "Williston! Williston! Rah!! Rah!! Rah!!. Bettie accepted the Lord as her personal savior at an early age and began her Christian journey. She was a life-long member of the Mt. Roney Missionary Baptist Church, where she sung in the No. 1 and No. 2 Choir. She coordinated the sunrise services, and served on various church committees, including the sick & shut in. She was the mother of the church and the oldest member. She attended church faithfully, and she was a dedicated member of the United Order of Tents #699, and the Shinning Lights Gospel Singers. On August 11, 1938, Bettie Lee Johnson was united in holy matrimony to Chester Jenkins. The union was blessed with five children: Samuel Lee, Evans Woodrow, Chester, Jr., Albert and Yvonne 'Alice' Jenkins. Bettie was a Missionary, and she devoted her life to helping others. She was a remarkable woman of great determination, strength, and courage. She was a hard worker, touching the lives of many, throughout her house cleaning services. Bettie took pride in having worked in nursing at the James Walker Hospital, and was well-known throughout the community, as a woman of God and a healer. Many would call upon her for prayer through words and song, and for her healing touch and powerful connection to the almighty. She was a faithful friend and would feed anyone who stopped by her home. 'Aunt Lee', as she was affectionately called, was the matriarch of the Johnson's Family, and she had a steadfast love for her family. Everyone knew that Aunt Lee's house was always a place where you could find peace, love and nurturing, in time of need. She was an anointed prayer warrior! She covered her family with prayer and provided advice in every teachable moment. She was a generous, loving, and God-fearing woman. She lived her life for God and for her family. Bettie had many hobbies which included baking, cleaning, reading the Bible, and she had an eye for fashion. She loved beautiful hats, and elegant shoes. She would often share the latest fashion trends, colors of the season, and send family members far and wide on the search for the right colored sling-back shoe, at just the right heel and height! Bettie was a strong pilar in her community, and to her family, she will truly be missed. She is preceded in death by her stepfather, Mr. Robert Durant, her husband, Chester Jenkins, Sr., her children, Evans Woodrow "Woody" Jenkins (Rosa), Albert Jenkins, and Samuel Lee "Dickie" Jenkins. Her siblings, Selvin Tindall, Mary, Eloise and Viola Johnson, Rachel Moore, Ada Dowe, Flossie Durant Keaton and Frank and Wilbert Jones. She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy; her son, Chester Jenkins, Jr. (Edna) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and her daughter & caregiver Alice Davis of the city, her grandchildren; Chris Jenkins, April Bellamy, Berlina Thompson, Tyrone Jenkins, Kevin and Keith Jenkins, Latrasha Allen, Kimberly & Shavonne Jenkins and a host of great-grand and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and close family and friends.
